Fastest Way to Add a Large Collection — Use AI Photo Recognition

If you have a shelf (or shelves) full of DVDs, typing them one by one takes forever. The fastest method is to photograph your collection and let an AI read the titles for you — then paste the list straight into a spreadsheet and import it here.

💡 This works incredibly well. AI models like ChatGPT and Claude can read DVD spines from a photo with high accuracy — even at an angle or in low light.
🤖 Using ChatGPT
  1. Open chatgpt.com and start a new chat
  2. Click the 📎 paperclip icon to attach a photo
  3. Take a clear photo of your DVD shelf — spines facing outward
  4. Paste this prompt:
"Please list every DVD title you can see in this photo, one per line. Include the year in brackets if visible, e.g. The Godfather [1972]. Do not include anything else — just the titles as a plain list."
🧠 Using Claude (Anthropic)
  1. Open claude.ai and start a new chat
  2. Click the 📎 icon to upload your photo
  3. Photograph each shelf section separately for better accuracy
  4. Paste this prompt:
"Please list every DVD title you can see in this photo, one per line. Include the year in brackets if visible, e.g. The Godfather [1972]. Do not include anything else — just the titles as a plain list."
📋 Then import the list into DVD Collector Pro:
Step 1Copy the list of titles the AI gives you
Step 2Paste into Excel or Google Sheets — one title per row in column A, label it "title"
Step 3Save as CSV and click 📥 Import at the top of this app
Step 4Your whole collection loads instantly — then add conditions and prices at your leisure
💡 Tip: you can also ask the AI to output a CSV directly — "format as a CSV with columns: title, year, genre, director" — and skip the spreadsheet step entirely.
📷 Tips for Getting the Best Results from Your Photos
☀️
Good lighting
Photograph in daylight or turn on room lights. Avoid flash glare on the cases.
📐
Shoot straight-on
Hold the camera parallel to the shelf so the spines are all in focus, not angled.
🔍
Section by section
Take one photo per shelf row rather than the whole unit — smaller photos = more readable text.
🔁
Multiple passes
If the AI misses some titles, upload the same photo again and ask it to look more carefully at specific areas.
Verify the list
Scan the AI's output before importing — it's very accurate but may occasionally misread a title.
📦
Box sets
Tell the AI "if you see a box set, list it as a single entry with the box set name."
💡 Other Tips & FAQ
▶ How do I get a free OMDb API key for live IMDB search?
Visit omdbapi.com/apikey.aspx, enter your email, choose the FREE tier (1,000 requests/day), and click submit. You'll receive a key by email within a minute. Paste it into the API Key box on the Add DVD tab — it's stored only in your browser.
▶ Is my collection data saved if I close the browser?
Yes — everything is saved automatically to your browser's local storage. It persists between sessions on the same device and browser. Use the 📤 Export button regularly to keep a CSV backup, especially before clearing your browser data.
▶ Can I use the app on my phone?
Yes — the app is fully mobile-responsive. You can photograph a shelf with your phone, paste the titles into an AI chat on the same device, and import the CSV — all without a computer.
▶ How are estimated values calculated?
Values are estimated based on format (4K UHD > Blu-ray > DVD), condition (Mint to Poor), edition type (Criterion, Special Edition, etc.), release year, and known collector markers (signed copies, LaserDiscs, sealed Disney vault titles). These are estimates — always check eBay completed listings for the true current market price.
▶ How do I transfer my collection to another device?
Click 📤 Export on any device to download a CSV. Then open the app on the new device and click 📥 Import to load it. Your full collection — titles, conditions, prices, notes — transfers instantly.
▶ The Sell Advisor — how does it decide what to recommend selling?
Any disc with an estimated value of $15 or more, or where the estimated value is at least double what you paid, appears in the Sell Advisor. It's sorted by estimated value so the best opportunities are at the top. Click 🔍 List to open eBay pre-searched for that title.
